In these conversations, one topic is repeated again and again: Teams are searching for less costly alternatives as their traditional suppliers have increased prices.

Why are prices for teamwear increasing so much and what can you do to counterbalance?

Teamwear budgets are stretched

Given the present cost inflation of many teamwear articles, more and more teams struggle to meet their requirements while still keeping within budgetary limits. Many have intensified their search for price-worthy personalized teamwear. Many equipment managers search not only for a basic training set, but also for special match sets for home and away matches. In addition, accessories such as socks, name plates, special designs place another monetary burden. Add fan articles like replica jerseys, scarves, jackets, or carpets into the mix, and soon the budget for the winter season is gone.

For all these articles, many suppliers have increased prices considerably over the last time. In our interview with Magnus Johansson, partner at Senzor Industries, he highlights the reasons for these increases and ways out of the dilemma.

Prices know only one way: up

“Price increases have hit consumers and companies on many levels over the last years, whether it’s classic supermarket articles, building materials, travel and energy cost. We are living in a climate where many companies believe that now is a great time to increase prices – simply because everyone does it,” explains Magnus. “For some teamwear suppliers, a hefty price increase in the fall has become almost a habit over the last years. Not always is this price hike driven by an increase in cost. At Senzor, we try to stick to necessary price increases so we can keep our customers happy in the long run.”

Beware of additional cost for your personalized teamwear

True, a basic teamwear item such as an icehockey jersey or a pair of bandy trousers may come at a good price – but do not overlook the side cost. Does your supplier charge you extra for the design? Do you have to pay for late deliveries? How about last-minute changes? All these add up.

“One thing to watch out for is delivery cost. Not everyone has your best interests in mind and searches for a cheap supplier. Senzor sees negotiating delivery costs as part of the deal so you get a good overall price,” states Magnus. “Also, all our teamwear items are produced in Europe. This keeps both delivery cost low and delivery times short.”

Sponsoring for affordable teamwear is great – or is it?

You have certainly noticed that some teamwear suppliers display their brand prominently on some of their clients. These teams may achieve a good sponsor contribution for their A-team, but there are serious drawbacks.

“There is no free lunch,” insists Magnus. “Costs have to be covered, and teamwear suppliers need to make a profit.”

So your precious sponsorship for the men’s team may come at the cost of a higher price for your women’s and junior teams. And even worse: as a small club you will not get sponsorship money from the teamwear supplier who has foregone a profit to see their name displayed on a more prominent team’s outfits.
